Powertel Communications (Private) Limited (Powertel) is the Information Communication Technology (ICT) arm of ZESA. ZESA generates, transmits and distributes power in Zimbabwe. Powertel’s primary mandate as derived from the Electricity Act [Chapter 13:19] is to provide integrated ICT solutions to support power generation, transmission and distribution by ZESA. The secondary mandate for Powertel is to use the excess capacity from its ICT infrastructure to provide ICT services to the public and generate revenue to ensure profitable growth. Going into the future Powertel’s thrust will be to provide integrated ICT solutions to support power generation, transmission and distribution by ZESA and also provide integrated ICT solutions to rural communities in Zimbabwe.

Powertel has an Internet Access Provider Class A (IAP Class A) license. The registered office of Powertel is located at 16 Birmingham Road, Southerton, Harare, Zimbabwe. The company operates the following business lines; optic fibre based Virtual Private Network (VPN), Carrier, Internet, Mobile Internet, Virtual Call Centre, Fleet Management, Transformer Monitoring and, Prepaid Electricity Aggregation and Vending (aggregator). The company has an extensive optic fibre cable network comprised of an Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) backbone network and metropolitan networks. The company also operates a wireless network. The OPGW backbone network spans the following routes: Harare to Plumtree via Chegutu, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Gweru and Bulawayo; and Harare to Mutare via Marondera and Rusape. The OPGW backbone network is interconnected regionally to Botswana and Mozambique.
